How To Get Noticed By Hiring Managers At Target Companies in 2023
Listen to my conversation with this high flying candidate to learn how to stand out from the crowd

Are you finding it harder than ever to get noticed by hiring managers?
If you have been scrolling through LinkedIn or watching the news recently (which I don’t recommend), odds are you’ve seen all the talk about tech layoffs and people struggling to land jobs.
Firstly, don’t worry too much because summer is one of the slowest, if not the slowest, time for hiring.
And thankfully, the total number of people being laid off has slowed in the last few months.

But many of those people haven’t found their next role, meaning the pool of applicants is still significant.
We’re also seeing increased scrutiny in tech investing, where fewer companies are receiving funding, the checks are smaller, and investors are taking their time to do due diligence on the company before signing the dotted line.
That means the number of open positions is smaller as companies shrink their budgets to prepare for uncertainty, and the pool of applicants is larger due to the layoffs.
It’s a classic supply and demand issue.
More supply of tech talent in the marketplace + less demand for tech employees = More challenging job hunt
But, as tough as things might be, it’s during these challenging times that powerful careers are crafted.
The startups that come out of this period of lower funding, increased investor due diligence, and significant focus on profitable growth will become the next Uber and AirBnb.
The job hunters who land roles during this time will have a playbook they can use to land any job they want during tough times and significantly increase their value to the marketplace in good times.
The current reality is that with all the competition, the “traditional job search” won’t cut it.
If all you’re doing is updating your resume, sending an application, and emailing the recruiter to indicate your interest, you’re going to continue to see rejections, and it’ll be impossible to grab the attention of the hiring manager.
If, instead, you use creativity to show your uniqueness and your abilities, you’ll have hiring managers and recruiters banging down your door.
And if there’s anyone who knows the challenges of the job hunt and how to grab the attention of hiring managers, it’s Chris Serrano.
Chris Serrano is an award-winning creative director who has done work for organizations like The Olympics, American Express, Motorola, Celebrity Cruises, Burger King, Molson Coors, Twix, and even Nelly.
Like many of you, Chris was affected by layoffs earlier this year.
But in his own words…
I have a natural tendency
to get creative under pressure.
And get creative he did.
Chris took to the skies and combined his love of skydiving and creative advertising to film him jumping out of a plane with a sign that read “OPEN4WORK.”
Then he posted it on LinkedIn and his own website.
The post exploded with millions of impressions, almost 50,000 likes, more than 1.5k comments, and almost 1k reposts.
His story was featured in news stories worldwide and on networks like CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, and in publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, People Magazine, US News, and World Report.
All of that attention has led to more work and outreach than he knew what to do with.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Chris to speak about how he has navigated his career, how early in his career he landed a recruiter response rate of over 50% using a picture of Elmo, and how he used his unique high-flying passions during a difficult time to become an unforgettable attention magnet.
If you want to stand out to hiring managers in 2023 using your unique interests and abilities, you need to check out this interview.

August isn’t over and total VC funding in US-based companies is already 40% higher than July.
Companies like Ramp and Neuralink raised hundreds of millions, and 107 other companies not only raised money but are hiring for people like you.
There you have it, a perfect example of how you can stand out in this competitive job market.
Do you need to jump out of a plane?
No.
But if you leverage your experience in your field, combined with a passion for the company you’re reaching out to, you can become a one-of-a-kind candidate.
And one-of-a-kind candidates land offers.
But until that offer’s in your lap… let’s become career champions together 🏆
